Sri Lanka off the Beaten - 14 nights

An itinerary for the traveler who wants to experience Sri Lanka in its purest authentic format.

Suggested accommodation options are either mobile tented camps when trekking or in the wild, home stays, basic lodges and eco retreats. Most of the days all meals are included as we venture out to remote areas except few days where you have the option of going out for dinner or lunch on your own. The trip mainly consists of trekking in the mountains, visiting tribal people, going on safaris, adventures activities and visiting cultural sites. This trip is only for the nature enthusiasts and the comfort level is limited and most of the time you will be taken through off the beaten path.

Visiting Veddha tribes, scenic train trip from Kandy to Haputale, Hiking in the Knuckles mountains, White water rafting, Elephants in Gal Oya National Park, Leopards in Yala National Park and Sinharaja Rain Forest walk are some of the highlights of the trip. The nature trails will take you through the most scenic parts of Sri Lanka such as Ohiya, Horton Plains National Park and Dumbara Valley. Bentota home stay will enable you to understand a daily life of a common man in Sri Lanka.

Adam’s peak climb and Whale watching in the Indian Ocean is optionally provisioned and can be done during December to April.

Day 01

  • Meet with our driver in Colombo
  • Transfer to Sigiriya – 4 hours drive approximately
  • Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress in the afternoon. This is a not to miss cultural hotspot and was nominated at the 8th wonder of the world.
  • Overnight stay in Kumbura Eco Lodge in Sigiriya

Day 02

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Visit Polonnaruwa ancient ruined city of Palaces and Temples, this is an UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Visit Dambulla Cave Temple, another UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Overnight stay in Kumbura Eco Lodge in Sigiriya

Day 03

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Transfer to the town of Matale where our expert trekking guide will receive you - 2 hours drive approximately
  • Do a very scenic trekking trip to a waterfall followed by a trek in Riverstone hills and Pitawala Pathana Plains in Knuckles Mountains which is considered a very beautiful destination and drive to Wasgamuwa end of the day. Picnic lunch will be provided.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Aligama Cottage of Wasgamuwa

Day 04

  • Early morning safari game drive in Wasgamuwa National Park at 6 AM. Wasgamuwa National Park is popular for large bodied wild Elephants and the park is not too touristic.
  • Back to Aligama cottage for breakfast
  • Transfer to Veddha Village
  • Lunch at the Veddha Village
  • Do a trek in the jungle with Veddhas to experience their way of tribal life and hunting methods
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Veddha Village in tents and enjoy Veddha tribal dance and music

Day 05

  • Breakfast at Veddha Village and bid farewell to Veddha and receive their blessings
  • Trek to a scenic waterfall with a picnic lunch
  • Transfer to Mahiyanganaya, an ancient village in Sri Lanka
  • Arrival in our camp by an ancient lake in Mahiyanganaya
  • Dinner and overnight stay in the camp

Day 06

  • Do an early morning bird watching and witness the spectacular sunrise while riding a traditional catamaran (canoe) and come back to the camp for breakfast
  • After breakfast you will be trekking through tea plantation, pine forest, a typical Kandyan village and rice fields. This is a circular trek which is approximately about 18 kms. Village culture and bird watching are some of the highlights of this trip. Picnic lunch is served.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Knuckles mountain camp with dinner.

Day 07

  • Breakfast at Knuckles mountain camp
  • Start the trek through home spice gardens, vegetable fields, rice fields, tea plantation, pigmy forests and plateaus. The trek is approximately about 8 kms one way and its 16 kms in total. At the end of the trail you would be able to swim at a base of a nice waterfall. You are expected to encounter with species such as Deer, Barking deer, Deer monkey and various types of Lizards. In this trek you will be climbing from 1200 ft to 1850 ft. On the way back you will be able to do some bird watching. Picnic lunch will be provided.
  • At the end of trekking trip you will be transferred to Kandy by about 5 PM
  • Overnight stay in Kandy at The Swiss Residence Hotel, this time some luxury

Day 08

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Transfer to Kitulgala – 2 hours drive approximately
  • Lunch at Kitulgala Adventure camp
  • Do stream slides and confidence jumps which is an adventurous and amusing activity
  • Do White water rafting in the Kelani river, conquer the rapids
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Kitulgala Adventure Camp (Option is available to climb Adam’s peak during December to May)

Day 09

  • Breakfast at Kitulgala Adventure Camp
  • Transfer to Hatton to get on board the scenic train departing from Hatton railway station at 11 AM. This is considered a very scenic railway trip in the world. The train rides through lush tea estates and thick forests, amazing scenery.
  • Our driver will receive you in Haputale railway station and transfer to you Sri Lak View Inn for an overnight stay

Extra Day 01

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • Our Trekking guide will receive you in Sri Lak view inn and start a very scenic trekking trip in the central highlands of Sri Lanka through rain forest patch, rail roads and tunnels built during colonial era, scenic and remote tea estates. Picnic lunch will be provided.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in a remote home stay

Extra Day 02

  • Breakfast at the home stay
  • Trek through the mountainous forest and scenic Horton Plains National Park to see World’s end point and Baker’s waterfall. Historical records show that Horton Plains has been an heaven for Elephants and they have been sport hunted by colonial invaders which has resulted the extinction of the marvelous creature from Horton Plains. Picnic lunch will be provided.
  • At the end of the trekking trip you will be driven back to Haputale for an overnight stay in Sri Lak View Inn.

Day 10

  • Breakfast at the Hotel
  • Transfer to Gal Oya – 3 hours drive approximately
  • Lunch at Galoya Lodge
  • Afternoon boat safari in Gal Oya National Park to see swimming Elephants. Gal Oya National Park is the only National Park in Sri Lanka where one could go safari in a boat.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Galoya Lodge.

Day 11

  • Breakfast at Galoya Lodge
  • Do a Jeep drive through the jungle to Nilgala river which flows under a boulder field
  • Lunch at Galoya Lodge
  • Spend some time relaxing or have take some walks in the hotel’s large compound
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Galoya Lodge

Day 12

  • Breakfast at Galoya Lodge
  • Transfer to Yala National Park – 3 hours drive approximately
  • Check in to Yala Safari Camp and enjoy a rice and curry lunch
  • Afternoon game drive in Yala National Park which is famous for its large herds of Leopards in abundance.
  • Drive back to the camp and enjoy some chilled beer served complimentary amidst a roaring campfire. BBQ dinner and overnight stay in Yala Safari camp

Day 13

  • Morning game drive in Yala National Park at 6 AM
  • Back to the camp for breakfast
  • Check out from the camp transfer to Bentota with some sightseeing on the way – 4 hours drive approximately (During December to April the option is available to stop one night in Mirissa for Whale Watching trip in the Indian Ocean)
  • Lunch at Bentota home stay
  • Dinner and overnight stay in Bentota Home stay

Day 14

  • Starting time 6.00 am from the Hotel by public transport (Bus) for about 35-40 km to reach a village in the Singharaja Forest area. A 2- 2.5 hour walk through the natural rocky path, surrounded by colorful range of mountains covered with indigenous and endemic plants and fauna of this Paradise Island. Picnic breakfast will be provided.
  • You will experience the legendary eco friendly life style of the pleasant remote village, unspoiled by modern concrete buildings or lifestyle, which helps to protect the wonders of nature as it is. You will have the luxury to relax and dip into chilled fresh water ponds as well. Picnic lunch and refreshments will be provided.
  • Finally, will visit a decades old Buddhist Temple arriving through a hard rocky path to reach a Buddhist monastery, where the monks keep themselves away from the busy world in order to meditate in order to rid ones lust and desire in order to attain Nibbana.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in a village home

Day 15

  • Breakfast at Village home
  • Return to Bentota in a Tuk Tuk ride
  • Our driver will receive you in Bentota and transfer you to Colombo – 2 hours drive approximately
