Knuckles Explorer, trekking in the valley of mist (Dumbara Valley)

Dumbara in Sinhala means ' a heavy mist' and the mountains which form the skyline of this valley take the shape of knuckles on a clenched fist. Thus this important region that is a center of bio-diversity takes the name of Dumbara Valley. It is located in the North of the city of Kandy past the Matale town. This is a mountain range that crops up separately from the central highlands. Daylight hours see the whole area drenched in sunlight with the leeward sides of the mountains in shadow, thus presenting quite an awe-inspiring spectacle to the visitor.

The area is cool with the blanket of mist that covers the valley. The highest single rock outcrop in the island “Lakegala” stands sentinel in the region. Lakegala is full of legend. Some believe that it is the centre of Emperor Ravana’s Kingdom as it’s located exactly at the centre of the island. The ancient village named Meemure which still retains age-old traditions is worth trekking up to. If it is eco tourism that interests you there is no better location in Sri Lanka than the Dumbara Valley. The whole valley extends to an area of about 234sq.kms. This valley is surrounded by 35 mountain peaks which reach up 3000ft., 20 peaks over 4000ft high and 14 peaks over 5000ft high and also 2 peaks over 6000ft high.

There is no other valley of this nature to be seen in the island. The region is a major watershed and several streams and rivers stroll down to feed the giant Mahaweli River. All types of climates that are found in the island could be experienced here. Many beautiful varieties of orchids endemic to the land add color. The mixed natural vegetation on the mountain slopes gives adequate ground cover. The area is considered the home of many Leopards that are in the endangered list. Many rare varieties of fish are found in the waterways. Some of the areas of this region look as if they have been left behind in the steady march of civilization. A visit there would take you to a strange world that you would not encounter elsewhere.
