Horathapola Estate is 50 acres of serenity, nestled within the balmy vibe of rural Sri Lanka. The design aesthetic of Horathapola Bungalow features touches of modern luxury that complement the stateliness of colonial architecture. The furniture is antique, the cuisine is a riot of colour and flavour, and the mood is languid.

The bungalow’s grandiose architecture is matched with a priceless collection of Sri Lankan antique furniture – some pieces are as old as the bungalow itself. A lush garden skirts the building, and features a salt-water swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, walking trails, and vibrant birdlife. Beyond the garden, the foliage extends into a live organic estate. Coconut, fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, and rice are all grown organically and sustainably, supporting around thirty families in the adjacent village.

The bungalow features 5 spacious bedrooms with en-suite, oversized bathrooms. Each room has its unique view of the garden, and ample seclusion in the form private balconies, patios and verandas.

An independent two-bedroom lodge with its own garden offers a more private option, which is ideal for honeymooners or small families.Horathapola is within an hour’s drive from the airport. Rid your jetlag by spending a couple of lazy days being spoiled by our staff, and let the love affair with Sri Lankan cuisine begin! Alternatively, a stay at our bungalow at the end of your trip is a great way to catch your breath from a hectic itinerary around the island. Take the time to unwind and soak up the essence of island living.

Horathapola invites you to reconnect with your sense of space. Four of the five bedrooms are over 300 square feet, and all feature oversized bathrooms. Each room extends into a spacious, private sit out area that looks out to a vista of foliage.

While all other areas are common to all guests, there are ample nooks and crannies around the property to quietly retreat to with a book. The library and large, common living and dining area are downstairs and look out across the garden and the pool.

All rooms have their own design aesthetic and feature unique pieces of antique furniture. High ceilings, hand-carved large four-poster beds, air-conditioning as well as fans, and airy en-suite bathrooms with hot water are standard amenities.

  • Maha CamareThe Maha Camare is ideally suited for couples. At over 380 square feet, the largest of our three upstairs rooms opens out to a large balcony a view over the garden and the pool. For added exclusivity, we treat Maha Camare guests with breakfast on the balcony.
  • Watte CamareThe Watte Camare is on the ground floor and is the biggest. The tall French windows open out to a patio that looks out into the garden. This is an ideal room if you have difficulty with climbing stairs, or even for a family with a child.
  • Pokuna CamareThe Pokuna Camare is detached from the main building and overlooks the pool. It is slightly smaller than the other rooms but features an open-air shower, and is filled with subtle embellishments that give it a cosy feel.
  • Family SuiteThe Family Suite features two well-appointed, adjoining rooms and is ideal for a family with children or small group of close friends. The rooms share a large, common balcony with “haansi putu” (antique lounging chairs) that look across the garden.
  • Family LodgeThis intimate, two-bedroomed cottage is a short walk from the bungalow and looks out into a private patch of garden. The Lodge is ideal for a family or a group of four friends and has two double bedrooms and attached bathrooms. It also features a roof-terrace with a view of the estates, and make for a great bird-watching vantage point (or simple a long, cool sun downer!).
