Star Fort

Built in 1763, located in Matara (160km) is the star fort built by Van Eck after the revolt, the immensely thick walls and well within this tiny stronghold was done due to the indefensible nature of existing Matara fort as noted by the Dutch Governor Rump in 1717. Significant fact is that during a revolt in 1762 the Royal Kandyan army conquered it though an year later Dutch recaptured it. The fort has a decorated gate with a monogram of the VOC and the words 'Redoute van Eck'. Below it is van Eck's coat of arms, flanked by two lions.
